#9: The Race Viewer - always know where the action is happening

Always know where the action is happening! Check out the “Race Viewer”, a tool where all 12 competing yachts are positioned on the route of each leg around the world.

Thanks to GPS beacons on board of every yacht,  hourly positional updates are received by the system, allowing the viewers to accurately plot each team’s progress. Furthermore, you can find detailed information of each yacht (e.g. boat speed, distance to the finish etc.), examine the weather conditions including forecasts, measure distances between landmarks or competing teams and catch up by rewinding the race action of the past 12 hours.

I am sailing on the blue yacht - "PSP Logistics".

The “Race Viewer” can be found here. Enjoy!

A few hints:

  • By using the "Zoom" buttons on the bottom left of the map you can plot the action in detail.
  • Check out the symbols on the top right of the map. Here you can switch the map (satellite/terrain), measure distances (ruler tool), and obtain information on swell, wind, temperature. "Toggle course" provides you with the route including important marks such as scoring gates and ocean sprint sections.
  • By clicking on each boat a little box (see picture on the right) with individual information will pop up (SOG = speed over ground, COG = course over ground, DTF = distance to finish).
  • Below the map you find the current race standings, as well as the overall standings of the circumnavigation.

There are many more blog posts! Check them out here.
