This upcoming leg marks the beginning of the end of my adventure – unbelievable: ten months after the start of the first leg in August 2015, we are now preparing for our eighth and final leg – the Homecoming. Ahead of us lies the last ocean, the North Atlantic, and two further stopovers, Londonderry (Northern Ireland) and Den Helder (The Netherlands), before finally arriving in London on June 30th. The final 5,000nm should not be underestimated, as the mixed and often unpredictable conditions as well as the Golf Stream and cool Labrador current can give you a push in the right or wrong direction. Current weather predictions say that we first should beat into the wind for about a week then experience some lighter conditions before the wind direction is expected to shift around and come from behind. The 3,000nm to Northern Ireland should be the last real challenge of the race, before arriving in Londonderry. The last two races to Den Helder and London will be intense, yet the anticipation of seeing family and friends and eventually completing the circumnavigation are a huge motivation. Before the race finish we’ll hopefully have some time to gather our thoughts, review the past 11 months and put our achievements into perspective.
